How Are Your Thoughts and Self-Talk Impacting Your Life?

Your thoughts are important, and they impact every aspect of your life. To have an abundant mindset, your daily self-talk is imperative. How can you expect to live abundantly when you are thinking so negatively?

Understanding how your thoughts are impacting your life starts by taking four simple steps.

1. Check your self-talk.

Are your words cheering you on with love and compassion, or are they highly critical and condemning of yourself? How do your words make you feel? Take a note of this.

  • Are they building your confidence?
  • Making you bold or optimistic?
  • Are they filled with hope and love?
  • Are the words you are speaking over yourself inspired or filled with peace?
  • Do they give you peace, or are they stealing your peace?

It is important to pay attention to your emotions around the words you are hearing because they are giving you a message about something you need in that moment that you may not be getting.

2. Cross check your self-talk with God’s Word.

God-thoughts will never tear you down or make you feel unworthy. If you were to write down 5 thoughts you hear most often, what would they be? Can you find Scripture to back them up as truth Are they thoughts that God has about you? Or are they contradicting His Word? Make a note of this.

3. Where does negative self-talk come from?

Anytime we hear negative self-talk, those thoughts come from the Enemy disguised in your voice. He’s sneaky, clever, and deceptive, and he’s got many people fooled. He whispers hateful, condemning, and judgmental words that we believe are our own thoughts.

The question you may be asking is, why? Because when you believe his lies (disguised as your own thoughts), you turn against yourself and become your own worst enemy. How sneaky is that! The Enemy knows this weakens you and keeps you from God’s abundant life. It also keeps us from God’s Word and our relationship with Him.

So, what can you do to stop this cycle and win the battle for the mind?

4. Pay close attention to your thoughts, and replace those thoughts with truth.

Notice the impact your words have on your feelings and actions. You cannot afford to be lazy or passive when examining your thoughts. This is warfare.

The best protection you can have is to fill your mind with the truth of God’s Word because your greatest spiritual battle is being played out between your two ears. That’s why God told us to “no longer conform to the pattern of this world but be transformed by the (ongoing) renewing of your mind” (Romans 12:2).

Your thoughts are impacting your life, but how they impact is up to you. Will you take the steps to renew your mind and have an abundant mindset?
