How to Prepare for the Holidays So Your Emotions Don’t Take Control
The holiday season is here, and with it comes all the joys (and let’s be real, the challenges!) of family gatherings, shopping, and holiday prep. Between Thanksgiving and Christmas, it’s easy to feel like you’re juggling a million things at once—and emotions can run high. If you’ve ever felt a mix of excitement, stress, and maybe even frustration around the holidays, you’re not alone. Learning how to control your emotions can make all the difference in helping you stay calm, joyful, and fully present during these special moments.
Holidays often come with high expectations. You might picture the perfect family gathering, a beautifully set table, or gifts that bring smiles to everyone’s faces. But life isn’t always like the movies. Loved ones can say or do things that disappoint, or maybe not everyone can be there, leaving you with a sense of loss.
To prepare emotionally, let go of the idea that things have to be perfect. Allow yourself to enjoy the moments as they come, even if they’re not ideal. Lowering expectations doesn’t mean you don’t care—it means you’re allowing things to be real. When you let go of the pressure for perfection, you free yourself to feel more peace and joy.

With all the holiday plans and requests, it’s easy to overcommit yourself. But remember, saying “yes” to every invitation or request can leave you drained. Part of emotional control is knowing your limits and honoring them. You don’t have to accept every invite or say yes to every holiday task.
Boundaries help you protect your peace. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, give yourself permission to say, “Not this year,” or “Let’s do that another time.” Your well-being matters, and saying no can be a healthy way to ensure you have the energy to enjoy the things most meaningful to you.

During tough holiday gatherings or when things don’t go as planned, it’s easy to feel discouraged. But joy can be found in small, simple things, even amid stress. A warm cup of cocoa, a favorite song, a quick laugh—these moments can lift your spirits. Sometimes, simply focusing on what you’re thankful for can bring peace and joy to your heart.
Try looking for one thing each day that brings you a smile or a moment of comfort. Laughter can be powerful medicine for a heavy heart, so go ahead—find something that brings you joy, even if it’s a small silly moment.
